Movie Science Object Lesson: Our Actions Speak Loudly

9 Oct

Use this sound effects object lesson for teaching kids about the importance of how our actions speak loudly to others.

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.  Hebrews 11: 5, 6

Supplies: Flexible metal cookie sheet, large plastic bowl, 1⁄4 cup dried peas, hair dryer, coconut cut in half, piece of fabric.

Before we had computers to make all the great sound effects in movies, the special effects crew had to be creative with how to make sounds. Today we are going to make some of the sounds that they made using some everyday things you might be surprised we are using.

(Show each of the sound effects listed below and then let the kids try them. Try the sounds with the kids closing their eyes and see if they can guess what it sounds like.)

Thunder: Hold the metal cookie sheet by one end and shake it.

Ocean waves: Place the dried peas in a bowl. Tilt the bowl back and forth slowly so the peas slide from one side to the other.

Jet plane: Turn the hair dryer on.

Horse running: Cut the coconut in half. (Electric saw works great for this.) Drain the coconut. Place the two halves together and move back and forth until it sounds like a horse walking. Do it faster for a horse running.

Heart beat: Hold a piece a fabric with a loose grip. Then quickly stretch the fabric and then loosen repeatedly for a pounding heartbeat.

Anyone listening to sound effects from a movie might have an idea what
the movie is about. The same thing happens when people see the daily
choices we make in our lives. The choices we make give them an idea about
who we are and who we are walking with. If our choices are ones that please God, they can see that we are walking with God. If our choices are not pleasing to God, it is hard to see that we have a relationship with God.
One of the reasons that it was known that Enoch walked with God is that people could see the choices he made. (Genesis 5: 21-24) When we have a personal daily relationship with Jesus, we make choices that are pleasing to Him.
