Water Games to Beat the Heat

8 Jul

On the hot summer days, there is nothing better than games that include a little bit of water…or a whole lot of water! These games are crowd pleasers at any age – preschool to high school!

Supplies: Sponge and a bucket of water

Grab sponge – big or small – and a bucket of water. Soak the sponge in the bucket of water and have the kids sit in a circle. One person holds the sponge and allows it drip on top of each person’s head as they go around in a circle saying, “Drip, drip, drip…drop!” When the person with the sponge says “drop” they squeeze the sponge on top of one of the kid’s heads and begins to run around the circle as the person with the water dropped on their head chases them. The person with the sponge must make it back to the open spot left by the child chasing them.

Supplies: Four 5-gallon buckets and two Cups

Place two buckets (5 gallon pails work the best) a distance apart. Place the next two buckets the same distance apart as the first two. In the two buckets closest to each other, fill ¾ of the way full with water.  Divide the kids into two teams and have them line up behind each of the buckets filled with water. Give the first person in each line a cup. Each child will fill the cup with water from the bucket and hold it over their head, they must run to the empty bucket and dump the water from their cup into the bucket, while keeping the cup on top of their head. After dumping the water, they must run back to their team and pass off the cup. At the end of the game, the team with the most water in their once empty bucket wins.

Variation: Instead of cups, sponges can be used.

Splash Tag13616245_10204651838335453_966853885_o

Supplies:1-2 cups (or water gun) and 2 buckets of water

This game is played just like freeze tag. Instead of having to tag one another with their hands, each person who is “it” will have a cup of water (or water gun), and must splash other children with the water (or water gun). If a child is splashed, they are frozen and sit down, just like freeze tag.

Variations: Other children can tag the frozen children to unfreeze them; the frozen children can tag other children when they are sitting on their bottoms; or the game can also be played as normal tag.
